Sometimes i get quite bleak about fashion... then an amazing campaign comes along and I am transformed again.
Check this out on Style.com - Lauren Hutton is officially my style icon.
Elsabe Milandri was one of my best finds of 2010. She is the most gorgeous women and artist. Her work is so layered and I love her use of ink. Her work is full of mystery and creates conversations which i feel art should be about. You walk away with a sense of nostalgia and intimacy with the work.
She is fascinated by the edges of knowledge and the moments where exchange and sharing takes place. She finds her subject matter from personal, intimate space and lived in experiences. Her relationship with her husband and son come through strongly which makes the viewer feel that they are truly in her personal space.
Go and see her solo show of new work on paper at Sostento at Tine Skukan gallery on the 13th of March 2011 or view her work on elsabemilandri.com or lasttwoseconds.blogspot.com
I have been doing such amazing research today and came across these awesome pictures of the old cable car. I am not one for heights so can't imagine what it was like going on the old cable car. In fact I can't remember the last time I went up. I have to do it again, it's one of those Cape Town things us locals forget about.
The Ever Flowing Tide
I went to both the Michealas and the Stellenbosch graduate shows. I must say that i was blown away by so much talent. That is why I have set up this blog, thanks to my bestest Miss Moss, to show you all how much amazing South African art there is out there. I have given you all a small taste of some work by Kitty Dorje who i hope to do a big story soon.
However i would like to kick my graduate review off with Dale. He is My favourite. If I had oodles of boodle i would buy his work... actually what I can say is that his work is really affordable now, so I would get hold of him and buy soon before its too late. You have my word on it. It will be worth it.
This body of work is made up of type and line drawings made digitally with vectors. basically digital lithography. conceptually he challenges the values and motivations involved in the creative and productive process. He uses the language of information architecture through nonsensical graphs and diagrams. I can completely relate my friday night to a graph or the fact that a minute of mass production can be expressed in a expressive circle. Dales work has such a great balance between being a really clever idea and a really skillful artwork. I like looking at these prints and i like what they make me think about. have a look and tell me what you think.
I am currently working on a project called Name Your Hood. It is a very exciting concept about rebranding areas in urban cities.
You know how New york has Soho and Tribeca, while we don't really have anything... we just have the CBD in Cape Townand the other areas that we are never allowed to rename for political reasons - like the Bo-Kaap and District Six.
I will keep you posted on what happens with Name your Hood as it is still in the baby stages... but while doing my research I came across these amazing old Cape Town pictures.
This is it, this is my first post.
Kitty Dorje has long been one of my favourite Cape Town artists. She recently just graduated from Michealas and her work is skillful and subtle. This new body of work is entitled The Space Between and deals with five geographic sites around Cape Town.
Kitty is responding to these five sites through line, trace and mark. They are a personal response to the Castle, Green point lighthouse, Long Street Baths, Camps Bay tidal pool and the Paarden Island Bridge.
All of kitty's works in this series have some association with water and our environment. I love the way her work looks like someone has blown over it or the wind has swept across it. She is one to watch and her work lends itself to many environments.
